Does Trading Standards ‘guarantee’ the work of the trader?
The Registered Trader Scheme is mainly concerned with the good working practices and customer care aspects of the trader. It is not an assurance of any other part of an organisation’s business. The acceptance of a member onto the scheme does in no way mean that the Trading Standards Service guarantees the quality of goods or services provided by the member nor do we take responsibility for any aspect of the work done. The decision to use a business is solely the choice of the consumer.
What happens if problems occur?
Whilst we try to ensure that members comply with legislation, problems inevitably occur and we cannot guarantee that they won’t. If this should happen, we ask that you contact the trader in the first instance and give them a chance to put things right. The trader you use should then deal with them quickly and fairly and without too much delay. If matters still cannot be resolved, the Trading Standards Service can act as a mediator to attempt to bring any problems to a successful conclusion.
Why should I use the Registered Trader Scheme?
The Registered Trader Scheme is a list of vetted tradespeople who are committed to honest and fair trading. It gives the consumer peace of mind knowing that the company had been vetted by Trading Standards.
What is the vetting criteria?
Traders go through a stringent vetting process including:
- Disclosure Scotland check
- Police check for employees and subcontractors
- County Court Judgement Checks
- Trading Standards Database Check
- References from previous customers
- Compliance with civil and criminal law
- Companies House Check
- Relevant membership of any trade associations
Are there discounts for older adults?
Some companies give a set discount for older adults, this will be displayed by a

logo on the trader's details. Some companies will give a discount after they have assessed the cost of the work, so you should ask them when they come out to look at the job.
